Beautiful City

** Featuring: Live painting by Elicser Elliot, Lexr and Celo // Music by Tanika Charles and Deejay L’Oqenz **

INFO
Join city builders, young people, artists, academics, councillors and mayoral candidates to determine positive steps forward for BeautifulCity.ca and learn about how to make the city budget process work for you. Open discussion will follow concerning the value of building vibrant and democratic public spaces. Moderated by: Ravi Jain (WhyNot Theatre, ArtsVote), Sabra Ripley (Community Health Advocate, HoP, B-girl) and Che Kothari (Manifesto Community Projects.)

BACKGROUND
The billboard tax has been passed but zero new money has been invested in beautifying or democratizing access to public spaces with art in the 2010 Budget. This goes against highly favourable public opinion polls by EKOS (2009) Environics (2007) and Pollara (2005) and a 4500 person petition, 60 endorsements by organizations and reams of city plans to build a successful Toronto for the long-term. Along with the Mayor, city councillors from across the political spectrum have also been very supportive of a billboard tax to fund art in committee, council and the press. Similarly, public consultations, staff and consultant’s reports stated that the purpose of the tax was to support arts and city beautification projects.

We are not really sure what happened, however the budget has not passed yet. It time to get a bit pissed — then get smart and help correct this mistake by coming to the town hall. It worked to get the tax. It might just work to take it back!

Black Coffee

February 21st, 2010 No comments
Here's beautiful performance by Ella Fitzgerald.
Sonny Burke wrote the mysterious lyrics,
capturing a feeling of loneliness in waiting for a lover
you ultimately know won't be coming back.
Paul Francis Webster wrote the music.

BLACK COFFEE
A.
I’m feeling mighty lonesome, haven’t slept a wink
I walk the floor and watch the door and in between I drink
Black coffee
Love’s a hand me down brew
I’ll never know a Sunday in this weekday room
A.
I’m talking to the shadows one o’clock ‘til four
And lord, how slow the moments go when all I do is pour
Black coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I’m hanging out on Monday my Sunday dreams to dry
BRIDGE
Now a man is born to go a lovin’
A woman’s born to weep and fret
To stay at home and tend her oven
And drown her past regrets in coffee and cigarettes
A.
I’m moaning all the morning, mourning all the night
And in between it’s nicotine and not much heart to fight
Black coffee
Feelin’ low as the ground, it’s driving me crazy
This waiting for my baby to maybe come around
CODA
My nerves have gone to pieces
My hair is turning gray
All I do is drink black coffee
Since my man’s gone away

Aguas de Março

This is my favorite Antonio Carlos Jobim tune.

It’s a masterpiece of melodic development with a wonderful chord progression, incredible arrangement, and stellar performance.

I am currently arranging it for a small ensemble.

The audio quality of the video is poor.
Click on the song title to open it on a separate page.
Try to sync it the video (turn the volume off)
- I included audio I recently purchased.

I’m So Lonesome I Could Die, Hank Williams

February 13th, 2010 No comments
The first time I heard this song by Hank Williams I thought it sounded like a movie that was made during the Great Depression. Some guy on the road with a guitar, singing songs for his supper. Sorta like Woody Guthrie, but this was way before I even knew who he was. Then I heard the Cowboy Junkies version and I started to cry.
They caught that melancholy that you only find in the depths of a Canadian February.

I’ll Never Tear You Apart, Martin Tielli

February 13th, 2010 No comments
My student Mark is a progressive rock fan
and often brings in current stuff I haven't heard of,
which is great because I used to listen to
Yes, Gentle Giant, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, King Krimson, etc.

After my teens I moved more into art, experimental, and improvised music
and lost touch with the progressive rock scene.
However, I always wanted to see the Rheostatics.
They seemed like an interesting band.
I heard some of their recorded music years ago
when drummer John Lennard was still in town.

Today Mark mentioned Martin Tielli's song,
I'll Never Tear You Apart.
I went to youtube an found a wonderful video
that featured Martin and his guitar singing this curious song.

Shaking All Over/Smokestack Lightning

February 13th, 2010 No comments

These tunes are great for getting a feel for one of most popular scales
known to the guitar

E minor pentatonic

E G A B D E

As the name suggests, there are only five notes,
the 2nd and 6th notes are removed from it’s parent scale,

E natural minor:

E F# G A B C D E.

Sultans of Swing

I remember when this song came out.
I was in Montreal hanging out with Liz Harris,
a budding singer at the time.
We both thought the song was oddly catchy.
Sort of an upbeat Dylan tune with a fancier guitar player.
All these years later the song lives on
and I’m still not sure what the hook is.
Listening to

Pedro Javier Gonzalez

gives me a better sense of it’s excitement.

- I recently arranged Sultans for 4 guitars
and will record it with a FUSIO ensemble
later this semester.

5 Guitar Loop, FUSIO

Here is a low quality video of a recent FUSIO class with
Luis (nylon guitar) Jansten, Lindsay, and Atena.
I like the feeling of the music.
